Our Business Ecosystem
We can't change the business of real beef on our own. Some businesses try to hide who they work with, but we want you to see and understand the rest of the business ecosystem it takes to bring a better beef with a bigger purpose direct to your door:
Although we don't like to talk, let alone think about it, the mystics and philosophers have long reflected on life and death as part of a cycle that gives both meaning. We are committed to treating the final stages our animals' lives with utmost respect and care. Right now we only use and trust one processor with that care, and they set the standard that others will be expected to follow...
Lorentz Meats - Cannon Falls, MN
Mike Lorentz still runs the plant his parents started more than 50 years ago. Michael Pollan made Lorentz Meats famous in his book "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Mr Pollan described Lorentz as "The Glass Abattoir" for having the courage to install a window overlooking their processing plant for full transparency into how meat was processed. We know of no better way to describe the deep ethic of Lorentz than the quote from Wendell Berry they have front and center on their web site:
"We cannot live harmlessly at our own expense; we depend on other creatures and survive by their deaths. To live, we must daily break the body and shed the blood of Creation. The point is, when we do this knowingly, lovingly, skillfully, reverently, it is a sacrament; when we do it ignorantly, greedily, clumsily, destructively, it is a desecration."
We are proud to work with Lorentz Meats for the reverent processing of your meats.
Getting our beef from the farm to your door involves transport moving something material long distances. Done normally, this can be negative, but done better, this is also an area where we can have positive impact.
Although Processing and Logistics are the most obvious complementary parts of our business, there are some other folks we count on to bring the best possible experience of buying better beef:
PERC - Burnsville, MN
It may look easy, but digital marketing is an art form of its own. We know beef, and grass and soil and carbon, but figuring out how to tell our story and then present it in a way that might connect to you is something we needed a bit of help on. The folks at PERC not only helped us develop our brand, story and site, but will be working with us on an ongoing basis to keep you connected to what we hope is a never-ending story of rengerated land and life.
